If you have ever wondered what to expect when enrolled in a clinical trial, understanding the process might help you feel more confident and comfortable in your decision. Clinical trials are an important way that the public can contribute to medical research while potentially gaining access to new treatments before they become widely available.
Before You Enroll
The first step in every clinical trial is called informed consent. This process ensures that you fully understand the study's purpose, the treatment being tested, potential risks and benefits, and what participation entails. At Covenant, an experienced member of our clinical team will guide you through the consent form and answer any questions you may have. Your participation is always voluntary, and you may choose to withdraw from the study at any time for any reason.
Screening and Eligibility
After completing the informed consent process, you will move into what is referred to as the screening and eligibility period. During this time, the study team will conduct multiple tests to determine that you meet all study eligibility criteria. This may include lab work, ECGs, physical exams, imaging procedures such as MRI, and review of your medical history and medications. Eligibility requirements are designed to protect your safety throughout the trial.
During the Trial
Clinical trials at Covenant include receiving either an investigational drug or the matching placebo. The placebo is an inactive substance which looks identical to the investigational drug but has no pharmacological effects. Some studies are "double-blind", which means neither you nor the study staff will know which treatment you receive. This helps keep the results from being subjected to any bias. Throughout the study, you will have regular visits to the clinic where our team will monitor your health and collect data through lab work, imaging, and questionnaires. You will be closely supported, and any side effects or concerns that arise can be reported immediately so we can continue to keep you safe during the trial.
After the Trial
Once you complete the clinical trial, your data is used in analyzing the efficacy and safety of the study's medication. You may be offered follow-up visits and be informed of the results of the trial once they are available.
Takeaway
Clinical trials are the foundation of medical advancement and are the reason why we have safe and effective treatments available today. Each study follows strict ethical guidelines and is overseen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect participant safety, privacy, and informed consent. At Covenant Metabolic Specialists, we're committed to providing personalized care and close support for every patient throughout every step of participation in a clinical trial. By joining a trial, you're not only accessing expert care and close medical monitoring but also contributing to the development of future therapies.
